Difference between the preposition 'to' and 'towards'

To and towards: both are prepositions of movement 

 To :  used if the destination is certain. 

Like 

  • I am going to  Mumbai tomorrow.

Here - certain destination is Mumbai (after that the journey will stop)

 

Toward: used if the destination is not certain, only the direction of something or someone where movement is taking place, is mentioned. 

Like 

The child crawled towards the door.

Here, no certain destination is given just direction of movement I.e. 'door' is given. We don't know if  the child will move any further or not.

Some more examples 

  1. The ship is moving toward the northern hemisphere . It is sailing to North America. 
  2. The deer ran toward the woods,  by sensing danger.
  3. She will go Chennai next week.
  4. We like to  go to park in the evening. 
  5. It was our first trip to Shimla.
