Properties of linear equations
1. We can add the same number to both sides of the equation.
Consider the example x – 8 = 12
Additing 8 to both sides of the equation,
We have x – 8 + 8 = 12 + 8
⇒ x + 0 = 20
⇒ x = 20
2. We can subtract the same number from both sides of the equation.
Ex. z + 7 = 8
Subtracting 7 from both sides of the equation, we have
z + 7 = 8
⇒ z + 7 – 7 = 8 – 7
⇒ z + 0 = 1
⇒ z = 1
